Large pickup this week (but when isn’t it) but a real dearth of time. Reviews soon! What did you get this week?
Batman and Robin 11
Before Watchmen – Minutemen 2
Bloodshot 1 – most anticipated book of the week (tie)
Chew Secret Agent Poyo 1
The Massive 2
The Walking Dead 100 – Most anticipated book of the week (tie)
Ultimate Comics X-Men 14
Wolverine and the X-Men 13
No time for love, Dr. Jones! And no time for thoughts on this week’s haul just yet. Soon though, friends. Soon. This week though, instead of alphabetically, I’ll sort my acquisition list by the order in which I am most excited to read them, with number one OF COURSE being:
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – Century #03 – This requires its own post.
The Manhattan Projects #04 – How good is this series? Strong hints of Planetary here, and in all the good ways.
Batman Incorporated #02 – I’m slowly turning from a Marvel Zombie…
Hit Girl #01 – I can’t help it, I love Millars stuff (with the exception of The Unfunnies which was definitely truth in advertising.
Before Watchmen – Nite Owl #01 – I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the other BW titles, so I’ve some hopes for this.
American Vampire #28 – Read all of the back issues over the past two weeks; this is a solid series.
Fatale #06 – I can honestly say that I like everything Brubaker writes. Criminal, Incognito and now Fatale. His fedora & moustache obviously contains all of his writing powers, I must have them!
Justice League Dark #10 – Don’t auite recall what happened last issue, but it was clearly interesting enough for me to pick up the following one.
Batman The Dark Knight #10 – Is Finch still on this book?
FF #19 – Think it’s going to be a wrap on this series too. Do we really need two Fantastic Four/Future Foundation books?
Incredible Hulk #10 – Didn’t I say I was done buying this series?
Spider-Men #02 – If this is another 20 pages of set-up I’m going to be pissed.
Ultimate Comics Ultimate #12 – I hope everyone dies.
Light one this week, but compared to last week’s get I believe it’s a blessing.
Aquaman #09 – Still think this is a top 5 New 52 book.
Batman Incorporated #01 – How completely unreadable was the Bat-family of books prior to the new 52? Really, how unreadable was DC in general? But the Bat books just stood out as particularly awful. So…Batman was killed by Darkseid, but not really, he was shot through time (a la Steve Rogers?) and time traveled somehow back to present day to find out that his Dad was alive! Not only alive, but he was the head of a criminal empire? Or wait, he was the Devil! No, wait, he was neither! But then he/Bruce Wayne/Batman/someone died in a helicopter crash! But then came back wearing a purple/red/yellow costume from the 50’s! But that was just him segmenting his brain for just such an occasion…or something. Dude. DUDE! You screwing up the program. Rich guy in bat costume assaults crazy people in non-bat costumes. GO. Long way around but here’s hoping this is decent. Weren’t there riots or something because there was a Muslim Batman right before the relaunch of all the titles? Makes sense.
Chew #26 – I get the same feeling reading this book that I used to get reading Invicible. Get all the back issues.
Fables #117 – I remember I bought the first trade at Forbidden Planet, started reading it in the store, went across the street to get some coffee, finished the trade, went back to Forbidden Planet and bought the next six trades. I now read this out of habit; it doesn’t grab me as much as it used to.
Fantastic Four #606 – Never cared for the FF. Pick up a couple of runs here and there, most recently when Spider-Man joined up. Guess what? I don’t care again. Such a shame too, after last weeks aweseom .1 issue. Maybe this is just a fluke. Maybe.
More issues on the way tomorrow, potentially, depending on how fast I burn through these. Could they please hurry up with the Valiant relaunch rollout? I’m trying to relive the ’90’s over here!
GIGANTIC is the word. Good thing I get paid tomorrow. I picked up the following (a few more on the way, I wanted Bloodshot #1 but no dice):
Amazing Spider-Man: Ends of the Earth (one-shot) – Maybe it’s good?
Avengers vs. X-Men #04 – This I know isn’t good; in fact it’s stupid. The Cap vs. Wolverine scrape from last issue was ridiculous and not in a good way. This is just a dumb hero v hero battle comic, shades of the marvel/DC crossover where fans voted on whether Logan could beat Lobo, etc. Stupid on another level too, ’cause I keep getting them.
Dancer #01 – I had all but written Image off but someone they’ve come back strong with a varied line of interesting super-hero/non-super hero material that’s kept me intrigued. I’ll at least pick up a first or second issue of a new series. Speaking of:
Danger Club #02 – hooked from the first issue.
Daredevil #13 – This new quasi-lighthearted take on DD has me looking forward to this every month. Let’s hope Waid can string together a run like Bendis.
Fantastic Four #605.1 – Impulse purchase.
Fury Max #02 – I loved both Punisher MAX series, so if Ennis is involved I’m there.
Hardcore #01 – See Dancer and Danger Club.
Incredible Hulk #07.1 – Where did you go Marc Silvestri???
Justice League #09 – I swore for years I would never read a Justice League comic and yet here we are. Stil marveling (heh) at the fact that the New 52 gamble seems to have paid off.
Locke & Key – Clockworks #06 – When I first heard Stephen King’s kid was getting into comics, I gave the news an eye roll and that’s it. That was before I started reading L&K. Now I tell everyone about this. Read it. It’s good.
Pigs #06 – I forgot to get this issue at some point, so this is backfill. Another very intriguing pick from Image.
Saga #03 – The art isn’t exactly my thing, but hell, BKVaugh is writing it so I’ll give it a good, oh, 20 issues.
The Manhattan Project #03 – I LOVE this so far. The closest thing I can compare it to is Planetary, which I could read on a daily basis. That series might be in my Top 5 All Time.
Uncanny X-Men #12 – See AvX #4. I’m a sucker for crossovers, especially ones staring the X-Men. I believe this affliction started way back at X-Cutioner’s Song.
Winter Soldier #05 – Impulse.
Wonder Woman #09 – Another favorite New 52 title. I can honestly say I’d never picked up a Wonder Woman book before this reboot but I’m glad I gave this book a chance.
X-Factor #236 – I didn’t really check the cover too carefully, ’cause I thought it was Gideon on the cover. What can I say, I lie his name and I like his topknot. Sadly, it’s some doucher named Scattershot which sounds like your run of the mill mid-’90’s Image character. BloodStryke! HellWulf!
Batman #09 (Night of the Owls tie-in)
Batman and Robin #09 (Night of the Owls tie-in)
Fairest #03 (Fables spin-off)
Fatale #05 (C’mon, if Brubaker is writing it chances are I’m buying it)
Lobster Johnson: The Burning Hand #05 (not a huge Dark Horse fan or Mignola/Hellboy for that matter, but the name caught my attention)
Ultimate Comics: Ultimates #10 (madness in the Ultimates universe)
Ultimate Comics: X-Men #11 (ditto)
Uncanny X-Force #25 (i don’t know why I keep reading this. It started off as a pretty cool series, but this last story arc was a muddled mess)
The Walking Dead #97 – less talk, more zombie murder
Wolverine and the X-Men #10 (one of my favorite new books going, alongside Wonder Woman, Animal Man, Swamp Thing & Aquaman.)
For someone who swore up and down that the New 52 was a terrible idea, that it was yet another DC fiasco, etc etc…I find myself looking forward to those books more than just about anything else on the shelves most weeks.
