Further Thoughts on This Week’s Comics Haul

AvX #04 – So Daredevil, Spider-Man and Spider-Woman are supposed to be a credible force to stop this Juggernaut/Colossus hybrid (that we’re now supposed to be accepting)? Doubtful. I did like Hope’s beer trap & Kid Omega’s hand in it though.  Ultimately, Avenger punch X-Man is superdumb. See: Captain America obliterating Gambit’s stupid Cajun face for no reason whatsoever. I think Steve Rogers might be a sociopath. “What? I was using a shield! It was just self-defense.”

Fantastic Four #605.1 – Pick this up not expecting much; WOW. This was an awesome issue. Shades of Red Son & Planetary; alt history done right. I don’t want to say anything further; just pick it up and enjoy.

Hardcore #01 – Sci-fi, espionage, covert military actions, Robert Kirkman.  This is one to watch.

Incredible Hulk #07.1 – Not sure what to make of the ending.  That being said, this issue did feature  one of the single creepiest sets of panels I’ve seen in comics in quite awhile.  And I read Alan Moore’s Neonomicon.   Followed a few pages later but one of the funniest.  As were the pages of the Hulk “sowing his oats”. Speaking of , if I’m not mistaken Amanda Von Doom had a three-way last issue with two gamma irradiated, Hulked out wild animals aboard her ship.  How is she…alive?  Digging what Jason Aaron is doing with this series.

Uncanny X-Men #12 – AvX tie-in.  Compared to Wolverine & The X-Men, this is the inferior title.  It’s still considered a flagship book though, so you think they would notice something simple like character placement.  Look at the top panel of the first page:

Top panel

Look where Cyclops is. Now look where Colossus,Psylocke and Domino are.  Got it? Now please explain the following panel (this was as the bottom of the same page!)

X bottom

Based on the positioning in the first panel, this second panel would seem to show Cyclops turning to face Dr. Nemesis and Namor. A quarter turn at most.  Yet somehow Domino, who he was looking at head on a panel ago is behind him, as is Psylocke who was behind him on his right side.  Only Colussus and his ridiculously sized (Leifeld sized, really) shoulder are where appropriately placed.

Bottom line: buy Image, boycott AvX.

This Week’s Comics Haul

GIGANTIC is the word.  Good thing I get paid tomorrow.  I picked up the following (a few more on the way, I wanted Bloodshot #1 but no dice):

Amazing Spider-Man: Ends of the Earth (one-shot) – Maybe it’s good?

Avengers vs. X-Men #04 – This I know isn’t good; in fact it’s stupid.  The Cap vs. Wolverine scrape from last issue was ridiculous and not in a good way.  This is just a dumb hero v hero battle comic, shades of the marvel/DC crossover where fans voted on whether Logan could beat Lobo, etc.  Stupid on another level too, ’cause I keep getting them.

Dancer #01 – I had all but written Image off but someone they’ve come back strong with a varied line of interesting super-hero/non-super hero material that’s kept me intrigued.  I’ll at least pick up a first or second issue of a new series. Speaking of:

Danger Club #02 – hooked from the first issue.

Daredevil #13  – This new quasi-lighthearted take on DD has me looking forward to this every month.  Let’s hope Waid can string together a run like Bendis.

Fantastic Four #605.1 – Impulse purchase.

Fury Max #02 – I loved both Punisher MAX series, so if Ennis is involved I’m there.

Hardcore #01  – See Dancer and Danger Club.

Incredible Hulk #07.1 – Where did you go Marc Silvestri???

Justice League #09 – I swore for years I would never read a Justice League comic and yet here we are. Stil marveling (heh) at the fact that the New 52 gamble seems to have paid off.

Locke & Key – Clockworks #06 – When I first heard Stephen King’s kid was getting into comics, I gave the news an eye roll and that’s it.  That was before I started reading L&K.  Now I tell everyone about this.  Read it.  It’s good.

Pigs #06 – I forgot to get this issue at some point, so this is backfill.  Another very intriguing pick from Image.

Saga #03 – The art isn’t exactly my thing, but hell, BKVaugh is writing it so I’ll give it a good, oh, 20 issues.

The Manhattan Project #03 – I LOVE this so far.  The closest thing I can compare it to is Planetary, which I could read on a daily basis.  That series might be in my Top 5 All Time.

Uncanny X-Men #12 – See AvX #4. I’m a sucker for crossovers, especially ones staring the X-Men.  I believe this affliction started way back at X-Cutioner’s Song.

Winter Soldier #05 – Impulse.

Wonder Woman #09 – Another favorite New 52 title.  I can honestly say I’d never picked up a Wonder Woman book before this reboot but I’m glad I gave this book a chance.

X-Factor #236 – I didn’t really check the cover too carefully, ’cause I thought it was Gideon on the cover.  What can I say, I lie his name and I like his topknot.  Sadly, it’s some doucher named Scattershot which sounds like your run of the mill mid-’90’s Image character.  BloodStryke! HellWulf!
