The Walking Dead isn’t just the best genre TV on the market, it’s one of the top-rated shows period. Another series that ranks right up there both in terms of quality and popularity is Sons of Anarchy, a personal favorite of mine despite the crap ending to last season. SoA‘s creator, Kurt Sutter, recently took to WhoSay via Twitter to decry AMC’s treatment of his friend and colleague, Glen Mazzara, who took over as showrunner when AMC shitcanned founding Walking Dead producer Frank Darabont.
Sutter’s take is that Mazzara was shown the door because of budgetary disagreements. (Sutter also famously Tweeted in 2011 about the commonly held belief that AMC’s entire lineup began to suffer when the network blew its allowance on Mad Men.) I’m not necessarily convinced AMC is a bunch of miserly idiots determined to undermine shows like The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad (which is, in fact, the best show on television). But in a world where no one ever speaks out against the money men for fear of being blacklisted, Sutter’s relentless, foul-mouthed attack is something to behold. Let’s let the man tell it in his own words:
AMC is run by small-minded, bottom-line thinkers who have no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of it’s creative personnel. Time and time again we see events like what happened today with Glen Mazzara. They continue to disrespect writers, shit on their audience and bury their network. Mazzara took the work-in-progress that was “Walking Dead” and turned it into a viable TV show with a future. Without him, that future is dim. Showrunners are not development executives, we’re not cookiecutter douchebags that you plug into a preexisting model. TWD will suffer. Even Zombies need consistency. “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” will be gone soon. So will AMC. I hope their fucking stock takes a dive and the shareholders line up Sapan, Dolan and Collier and shit in their open hands. Cunts.
