Modern Borefare Game Club: Sleeping Dogs (reviewed by Sleeping Writers)

finish this game or I'll kill you!!!

Impervious Rex

OK! Let’s get down to business. Inaugural Modern Borefare game club presents: Sleeping Dogs

Vicious Pjurahead, What was your initial reaction to the game?

Vicious Pjurahead

I was surprised how into it I was right from the start.  Up until your post here on Modern Borefare I never paid much attention to it.  So many games come out and this one got lost in the shuffle of the more popular titles. My first sitting I must have played 4.5 hours.  I kept wanting to see what direction it was going in and how it differentiated itself from other sandbox games. The amount of sidequests available just in the first hour made me giddy..  I love when a game surprises me the way this one did.

IR

Really? Because I didn’t find it to be that surprising at all.  At least not initially.  Maybe I’m not as far as you.I’ve probably played 6 hours total so far. But when you’re talking about all those side quests…man, those get me stressed out.  For some reason i assume there’s a “right” order to do them in and it bums me out if I get it wrong.  But I guess there really is no wrong in a sandbox.

VPH

I think I was just so surprised because I knew absolutely nothing about the game. Didn’t stop me from beating the game this afternoon. Bloody as hell

IR

That’s fair.  I knew enough about the game that I knew I wanted to buy it and play it. The various reviews definitely helped sway me as well. You beat it already?  Ok, now we have to go off track a bit and discuss this: did you enjoy it? Or did you just speed through the end so you could move on to another game?

VPH

It feels like you’ve already played most games before they come out.  This game wasn’t the case. No not at all, I didn’t speed though; I have no other games lined up.  Just really got into the story and its really fast paced.

IR

Did you do all of the side quests? Get all of the collectables? Are you going to go back through the game again?

VPH

I found that the side quests were just really intriguing, all so different and quirky including everyone’s favorite, COCK FIGHTING!!! The only side quest path I completely finished was the karaoke. Did you do karaoke yet?

IR

I think I hate the karoke, but that may have to do with the fact that I hate karoke in real life.

(What kind of mischief do we get to after the jump? Only one way to find out!)

VPH

Yeah but the first song….

IR

I don’t want to hear someone butcher a sing I quasilike, let alone someone butcher a song by The Clash.

VPH

That’s a perfect example of a pleasant surprise.

IR

True. Was not expecting that.  Or the radio stations.  Very cool, interesting, eclectic, but (I assume) keeping true to what you would hear on the radio station in that part of the world.

VPH

Did you feel some characters were a bit too….shiny? Especially when Wei has his shirt off.

IR

I felt like the characters, frankly, looked like shit. BUT… I just finished up LA Noire the previous day.  SD and LAN are pretty extreme examples of character models.  How often did your Wei have his shirt off?  You had him shirtless the whole time. Don’t front!

VPH

Haha right now he’s rocking the big chain and an orange hat. Another aspect of the game I thought was just top notch was that hand to hand combat was the main form of combat.

IR

Yeah Im surprised at how little gunplay I came across.

VPH

GTA was mostly guns, here you learned fighting methods via upgrades and an awesome selection of bloody ways of murdering people.

IR

I just finished the gun control tutorial under the bridge.  Interesting mechanics, especially with the Dead Eye/Bullet Time rip off/homage/inspiration

VPH

Yeah that’s what I said too, but I didn’t mind. Have you done a lot of driving? What’s your opinion of it?

IR

Mostly motorcycles.  The controls are far better than GTA IV but not as good as Saints Row the Third.

VPH

And the camera?

IR

Ugh…at best it was a bit distracting and at worst I wanted to stop playing.

VPH

Yes very true.  Mostly when stuck or going in reverse. Really aggravating.  The camera goes in circles above you, then you wind up hitting more cars

IR

Yeah reverse is the worst.  So going back to the highlights/lowlights of the game, I thought the lockpicking/hacking/bug planting mini games were really fun.  Especially the hacking. At first I didn’t know what the hell was going on, but after figuring it out it’s actually pretty fun.  Challenging puzzler.

VPH

I only failed the lockpick challenge once.

IR

I haven’t failed yet (’cause I’m a winner); What happens? You just redo it?

VPH

Yeah

IR

Something else I wanted to mention was the Face system.  It seems to lack any kind of weight to your actions.

VPH

I think hacking mini games are the norm now.  Anything to add more gameplay elements to the game.  Some are better than others. I know, whether your actions are good or bad they raise your face value.

IR

I can mow down tons of people on the street and sometimes the cops will chase me other times they won’t. Makes no sense.

VPH

I like how you level up, but they could have had good or bad face missions and you choose the kind of character you become.

IR

Exactly. That seems pretty obvious right?

VPH

Maybe that’s something they can do next game.  Maybe if Square Enix had more time.  But it’s really just a minor gripe.

VPH

And the fact that I want to only break legs and spines on the streets. No one cares…I mean, the game is trying to establish a sense of realism right? You’re an undercover cop in a city where your actions should have more direct consequences.  Yes they don’t.

IR

For a game of this ilk it really did more good than bad.  I’m surprised at how much they got right for the first run through a game like this.  Even the missions I fail, who cares, I start right back at the spot where I failed.  Do you remember the karaoke club waitress that you “date” and you find out shes cheating so you go and investigate?

VPH

But GTA was the same way though right? I guess there is only so much realism.  I like how whenyou beat up gangs and there are decapitated bodies & knives everywhere, you just go home, come back and the alley is clean.

IR

Hong Kong keeps their streets clean. So the guy says “Hey Wei, your gal is cheating on you. Yadda yadda.”  So you tail her to a phone, she says to her new man “I’ll meet you next week.”  The screen even flashes “Meet Tiffany next week.” Yes when you follow the mission marker, it takes you right to the next point in the mission where you tail her! It doesn’t even attempt to simulate a week! It’s barely a minute later.  That just irks me.

VPH

I know but how much realism do you want? I agree it could have said “Meet her tomorrow.”

IR

GTA did it.  Roman says “meet me here at 21:00” and it’s 14:00. So you go kill some time and go meet him.

VPH

Yeah I know, but I think this could go back to my previous comment where they can hammer out these details if there is a sequal.  I think its cool.

IR

Regardless, after she dumped me, she, uh, died.  Via broken spine sneak attack.

VPH

Anyway, what kind of undercover cop would get away with brutally killing thugs to just protect him from who he really is.

IR

The crowds don’t seem especially involved either.  You start massacring in GTA, Saints Row, even prototype, and they start to run.  I guess in Hong Kong it’s just more a docile crowd.

VPH

I’m going to stab 47 people with this ginsu knife, but you can’t arrest me, Im undercover. Wink wink.

IR

Exactly! Back to no consequences. Also, what was up with the names?

VPH

Dogeyes? Bizarre.

IR

One dude has an Asian name, everyone else sounds like Beverly Hills phone book! Winston. Tiffany. Why did they localize names that make no sense.

VPH

Tiffany is played by Emma Stone.

IR

Oh really? The cocktail waitress? Or the blond chick that you just happen to meet.

VPH

The one you take to the dojo.

IR

Oooh. Thought that voice sounded familiar.  So, If you were telling someone about this game, really trying to sell them on it… Whats the one thing you would tell them.  Remember when I told you about the parachute game scene from Saints Row with the Kanye West soundtrack?  Is there ONE in game moment, that you would recommend to someone?

VPH

GTA with a more strategy like combat style. Also , when I heard The Clash song at karaoke.  I guess another time was when of my favorite new songs (Futura by Battles) came on the radio.  I did karoke last week. Meat Loaf baby!!  I had to do more than pressing up and down though.  I actually had to sing.

IR

Well…Yeah, that’s what karoke is.

VPH

I would also say the first time you smash someones face into a ventilationfan and theIR head explodes, that got me real excited. I kept wanting to see the different ones they offer. And they offer a lot towards the end.

IR

Or smashing them through a floor nightclub.

VPH

I’m a but of a trophy hunter and the one with the clothes is very difficult.  There’s like 30o items of clothes you have to find.

IR

You have to find clothes?

VPH

some are in chests

IR

Was there anything you didn’t like, other than the camera? Anything jaring that took you out of the game?

VPH

One thing in particular, when calling a taxi, he can’t take you wherever you want. Only to main mission locations.  So if I wanted to do a side mission on the other side of the map and I didn’t feel like driving I would just turn the game off.

IR

As much as I like playing with radio stations in these sandbox games, driving from one end of the map to the other is not fun.

VPH

No, its not. Especially when at any moment the cops can start chasing you.  Speaking of cars, the new Need for Speed actually looks pretty interesting.

IR

I think its by…Criterion? The Burnout Paradise folks?

VPH

Yup. There’s a start and end point but you can choose your own route. And cops play a part in it.  They try to disrupt yo during the race.  I like how most games now even if they aren’t MP are implementing some kind of system of encouraging replay ability for certain tasks. Via your friends list.  Like SSX.

IR

Yeah, but how much has it encouraged you to replay any of them?

VPH

Not many, but SSX you race against peoples ghosts.  Its hard now to get 10 friends online at the same time. I don’t even have 10 friends .  I have a dog who is deaf

IR

On PSN or in real life?

VPH

PSN.  I just downloaded episode 3 of Walking Dead. IGN gave it a 9

IR

For what. PSN? Iv’e been thinking about getting them for the ipad.  Is there any replayability?

VPH

tons of replayability.  So many times where the choices you make determine the next scenes. Ive learned you can kill someone in the first episode and it haunts you the next episodes.  A certain character holds a grudge and it effects the story.

IR

Really that’s awesome.  That kind of gameplay mechanic does hook me.

VPH

Very curious to play the whole game once again I have all the episodes.  And choose the opposite of what I did in the previous playthrough. I played episode 2 in 2 seatings.
